How much harm can you do when you try to do something good in the wrong way?
Naturally, this is not a completely random thought. I was watching the news last night and there was this report on a Dutch website that posted pictures of children that have been forced into the making of childrenporno, so that they might be recognised and the guilty party (the organisation is thinking about guilty family or friends) can be prosecuted. All in all a good cause.
However, they made two gigantic blunders, in my humble opinion.
1: They failed to check how recent their data was.Apparently, at least one boy in the picture list was recognised as being from an American case that was solved already. I can immediately imagine some random kid checking the page and recognise some other random kid from school. Said kid was indeed victimised, but with the whole affair behind him, he tries to get on with his life. This, naturally, brings back the whole shabang of trauma’s.
Now this first error can be corrected and, if someone in there actually uses his brian, this problem should not happen again. however, this second one I find much more disturbing in principle.
2: They implicitly ignored very basic human rights.I can very easily understand how you’d like to keep that part of your life a secret. After all, social stigma's can be quite hard to shake. Sometimes, you just want to move on.
And on this upbeat note, I leave you for the day. I’m sorry to bring you down, so here’s a funny link to bring you back somewhat.
Oh, and the thought on the top is also my frustration of the day.
